911 and Non-Emergency Number lists

Recently in this post, I told you about a new web site Cache County had launched concerning 911 and reverse 911.

Now, the Utah Department of Public Safety has launched a new website with support for for home computers and mobile devices alike.

http://www.911.utah.gov provides you with 911 information, and almost more importantly, a list of proper telephone numbers for various emergencies where 911 should not be used.  For example, it is not appropriate to call 911 to reach Poison Control.  I've posted below some guidelines the UDPS would like to remind you of.

EMERGENCY 911:
CALL WHEN IT COUNTS

Call 911 if there is a threat to loss of life or property. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance of emergency medical services, the police department or the fire department. Call Emergency 911 to:

  • SAVE A LIFE.
  • STOP A CRIME.
  • REPORT A FIRE.

In any other situation, please contact your local non-emergency authorities.

When you visit this new website on your smart phone, like an Android phone, iPhone, or Blackberry, you can get a a mobile formatted page of links that when clicked, will actually get your phone ready to dial the number in your phone software.  The new bookmark can even be saved to the home screen on your device so it even looks like its own app.  Maybe stick it right next to Angry Birds and you'll never be without these critical numbers.

I stopped by the site on my PC when I got home and searched for the 84341 zip code and this is what I got.  It is quick, easy, and always updated with the latest contact information!

This is what you get from your phone, click one of these links and you are just one more click away from calling your emergency in to the right place:

Weekend Flooding Expected

Currently the Logan River is still above flood stage at 5.1 ft (~1500cfs).  The Salt Lake office of the National Weather Service has released a new forecast this afternoon which anticipates that we may exceed the 100-yr flood level by the end of the week.  I short presentation of all the current flood watches in Utah is available at the following link.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/wxbriefing/wxb22jun2011/player.html

Please caution all your friends and neighbors to keep their children and family members away from the swift water.  Anyone watching the levy's along the Logan River, please report any problems to Logan City by immediately calling 911.

Hidden Village Sandbagging, monthly CERT training, and updated signups

Phew!  Last week was busy.  I've put this update off, but I've been recovering and catching up on other responsibilities since Saturday.  Over 7 days, about 15,000 sandbags were filled and levee's built at more than 15 homes.  It took around 1400 community volunteers, and 100 CERT volunteers to make this happen.  Thanks to everyone that contributed in any way, it was a great opportunity to put our training to the test!

Tonight the Cache County CERT Council hosted the monthly CERT refresher at the county roads department sheds.  The topic was Incident and Operational Leadership.  We learned about how to organize a team of CERT and/or volunteers for a live incident.  We had 8 community volunteers come and let the CERT's train them and do a bit of sandbagging.  Thanks everyone that came tonight, it was a lot of fun.

I've updated the sandbagging signups to be generic for the next few weeks of possible sandbagging.  To clarify, now that we have completed initial flood preparations, this is for emergency sandbagging.  Please encourage your group leaders to signup so we have a list of volunteers if emergency sandbagging is needed.  If want to sign-up as an individual, that's okay too!

Thank you for your help!

2011-04-30_09-35-43_392_0.jpg

I have been asked to pass on a big "Thank You!" from Hidden Village PIP, Logan City VOAD, and Logan City CERT, to all of the people who helped today with the sandbagging effort, and to those who volunteered their time otherwise to make it happen.  We really appreciate all of you, and want you to know how much it means that you are helping support this effort and the community!

The sandbagging operation today was able to build levee's behind three of the target homes, this effectively meets the goal we set out to do, so good job everyone!  However, there are many more levee's that need to be built.

Next week there will be sandbagging happening every day in Hidden Village.  Monday May 2nd through Friday May 6th, from 4-8 pm, we will be filling sandbags and stacking them in preparation for Saturday, May 7th, where we will be forming congo lines and building levee's once again. There are many shifts available, and so many volunteers needed.

Always learning and seeking improvement, we are changing the way the online signup form works a little bit.  We would like to ask all volunteers to seek out the leadership in your area, and arrange to be signed up as a group.  Please consider signing up as business groups, clubs, church groups, and any other groups you may be a part of.  We ask that the group leaders either register on the site or email the Logan City VOAD Coordinator, Heidi Bleazard.

Full information can be found at the signup form at the following link:

http://www.prepareutah.org/cache/sandbag

Thank you again for all your hard work today!

Updated: Sandbagging Volunteers Needed in Logan City tomorrow

207594_1895797441935_1451552848_2109643_4227543_n.jpg

Volunteers Needed - Saturday, April 30 2011:

The Logan City Volunteer Coordinator, Heidi Bleazard, is requesting 180 volunteers for sandbagging in the "Island" area of Logan City.  Volunteers will be needed for a 10:00am - 12:00pm shift this Saturday, April 30th.

Please go to the following link, or click the link in the right sidebar, for complete info and to signup online.

http://www.prepareutah.org/cache/sandbag

CERT responders should check with their area/city CERT leaders before signing up, as you may already have an assignment.  CERT leaders are encouraged to sign up as a group.  Please see the form to do that.

Don't forget to see the map below the form for directions to the volunteer staging area.  As always, if you haven't been activated stay away.  Spectators make great victims for accidents!

New Gear Forum!

I've been real into emergency gear recently and I realized that we didn't have a place on the site to share stuff like that, well perhaps the General Forum, but I wanted someplace special. And so born was the Gear forum!

Please keep a couple things in mind when posting to this forum.

  • Post enough information for others to find the same product or a similar product in the future
  • Tell us why you like it so much, and more importantly, tell us why we would like it!
  • Posting an image when possible is a big help, you can also include an image file as an attachment when you start your post
  • Include a link to the retail store page, or the manufacturers product page.

I will admit that I'm not too keen on fantastical bargains. I tend to be weary of them, so if I see anything that seems too good to be true, expect that I'll pull it down until its been verified. I just don't want anyone to get burned that way from this site.

I'll share first.

Last week I got to try out a new pair of gloves I got for CERT. They are Youngstown Safety Lime Kevlar gloves.  They are "mechanics-style" gloves, lime-green with a reflective stripe and a Kevlar lining.  Just what I needed for dealing with debris!

http://www.ytgloves.com/products.asp?productId=282&categoryId=43&subCategoryId=0&subCategory2Id=0

They were great when sandbagging in the Country Manor area. My hands stayed clean and pretty dry, they breathed well, and had really good grip on the sandbags. The metal tie on the bags also weren't a worry for me as the Kevlar lining kept anything from poking through.

Later that day I used them when doing maintenance on my dad's ham radio tower. They held up well and again had excellent grip even on steel cabling.

The best deal I found on them was at Amazon.com through one of their registered retailers. I paid $34 and I'd buy more of them.

Looking for help

I'm looking for help with the site. There are two roles I need help with.

Site Design

I need at least one person to help me out with the back end portion of the site.  This person would:

  • Help fixing some of the bugs with layout and features
  • Help implement new site features

Content Publisher

I need one or two people that could help gather some beginning content. This person would:

  • Research content for the site.  This includes videos, handouts, classroom events, books, links to related sites, training information, local programs, etc.
  • Make scans of existing paper handouts and publish them to the site.
  • Posting this content to related sections of the website to provide a initial base of interest for new users.

If you have some free time and would like to help out please contact me at support@prepareutah.org
